Why You Should Drain Your Water Heater Every Year (And How to Do It Without a Flood!)
Hey there, water warriors!
Your water heater might not be the flashiest appliance in your home, but it’s one of the hardest working. It delivers hot showers, clean dishes, and cozy baths all year—without asking for much. But there is one little favor it needs: a yearly draining.
Yup, just like your car needs an oil change, your water heater needs a flush. Not sure why or how? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with this fun and easy guide to keeping your water heater happy, healthy, and heating like a champ.
Why Drain It?
Over time, minerals from your water (especially if you have hard water) settle at the bottom of your water heater tank. This sediment build-up can:
-
Make your heater work harder (hello, higher energy bills!)
-
Decrease hot water supply
-
Cause weird noises (pops, bangs, and rumbles—oh my!)
-
Shorten the life of your water heater
A quick annual drain helps clear out that gunk so your system can run efficiently and last longer. It’s like a spa day for your water heater.
DIY: How to Drain Your Water Heater (Without Flooding the Basement)
Tools you’ll need:
-
A garden hose
-
A bucket (for checking water clarity)
-
A wrench (maybe)
-
Some patience and a good podcast
Steps:
-
Turn it off – For electric heaters, switch it off at the breaker. For gas, turn the thermostat to “pilot.”
-
Let it cool – Hot water = hot burns. Give it a few hours to chill out.
-
Shut off the cold water supply – This stops new water from entering the tank.
-
Hook up your hose – Attach it to the drain valve (usually near the bottom of the tank) and run the other end to a safe drainage area (driveway, drain, or large bucket).
-
Open the valve – Twist it open and let the water flow out.
-
Check it out – If the water runs clear, you’re good! If it’s rusty or full of gunk, let it drain longer.
-
Close the valve & refill – Once done, close the valve, turn the water supply back on, and only after it’s full, turn the power back on.
Boom—you did it! High five!
