Flush Out the Gunk: Why You Should Drain Your Water Heater Yearly
Your water heater works hard year-round, but did you know that sediment buildup can drastically reduce its efficiency? Over time, minerals from your water supply settle at the bottom of the tank, leading to clogs, decreased heating power, and even premature failure. Draining your water heater once a year is a simple yet essential maintenance task.
Why Draining Your Water Heater is Important
- Improves Efficiency – Sediment creates a barrier between the heating element and water, making the heater work harder.
- Extends Lifespan – Regular flushing prevents corrosion and prolongs the unit’s life.
- Reduces Energy Costs – A clean tank heats water faster, lowering energy bills.
DIY: How to Drain Your Water Heater
If you’re comfortable tackling this yourself, follow these steps:
- Turn Off the Power – If you have an electric water heater, switch off the circuit breaker. For gas heaters, set the thermostat to “pilot.”
- Shut Off the Water Supply – Locate the cold water shutoff valve near the top of the heater.
- Attach a Hose – Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank.
- Drain the Tank – Open the valve and let the water flow into a safe drain or outside. Be cautious—water will be very hot!
- Flush with Cold Water – Once the tank is empty, briefly turn the cold water supply back on to clear out remaining sediment.
- Refill and Restart – Close the drain valve, remove the hose, and turn the water and power back on.
When to Call a Plumber
- If you notice rust-colored water coming from your taps
- If the tank is making loud banging noises
- If you see signs of a leak around the base
